The Connection to the World

Next, Expedition Mankind leads you to the exhibition area called ‘The Connection to the World’. Man is a master of communication: music, literature, telephone, television, the Internet, etc. We are creatures that need to communicate, and using various means have established communication networks with which we consciously interact. But even when we are not speaking, our bodies are never silent. We constantly express ourselves using our faces, hands, arms and entire bodies. Most research has been carried out into facial expressions. As a result, we now know there are seven basic facial expressions that are the same for everyone. These are the facial expressions for sadness, anger, joy, surprise, disgust, contempt and fear, all of which are congenital. No practice whatsoever is needed to interpret them - they can even be recognised by small babies. A language, in contrast, has to be learned by everyone.

Language Globe

There are between 2,500 and 3,500 languages on our planet. You can hear 40 of these languages at the Language Globe.
Languages are both stable and dynamic. They change over time. German, for example, has already passed through several stages - from Old High German through Middle High German to the German spoken today. Its grammatical structure has proven to be fairly stable throughout all these phases but word meanings have changed. What will German sound like in 50 years' time? Will it be full of English words, computer jargon and maybe even have been influenced by Turkish?

Body Rotation Puzzle

Facial expression, posture, clothing: only when all the signals sent out by an individual are in line with each other does he or she appear authentic. If someone tells us something with a smile and sceptical eyes, they will not be very convincing. While we find a skateboarder in a collar and tie to be amusing, a business woman wearing a suit seems the most natural thing in the world. The Body Rotation Puzzle illustrates all of this in a fun way. Sometimes we deliberately use facial expressions to achieve our goals. Who isn't familiar with a pout, big wide eyes or a put-on, angry look?
