The Beginning of Life

An incredible coincidence, fate, or accident? In view of the obstacles and uncertainties that life has to overcome on its formation, it is incredible that each day around 950,000 women become pregnant. Two nuclei fuse together and form a new life. Genetic information is mixed and an individual created, and one that is unique, singular and unrepeatable.

Walk-in womb

In the walk-in womb created by British artist Jan Niedojadlo, the beginning of life is approached in a highly emotional manner. Is it possible to feel the safety of the womb in this huge plastic installation? How does a human develop and grow before they are born? What does an embryo hear in the womb? Visitors can listen to gurgling noises, a subdued heartbeat and other original sounds from the womb. Although a baby will subsequently be unable to consciously remember these sounds, they will be stored somewhere in its head. Even during this prenatal stage, basic perceptive patterns are being formed that will accompany an individual throughout their entire life.

Begehbare Gebärmutter

Fascinating images of the growth of an embryo are shown in quick motion on three different monitors. As the foetus grows, the more human features we recognise: It sucks its thumb and can even have hiccups! To document the foetus' growth, Swedish photographer, filmmaker and science journalist Lennart Nilsson used tiny lenses, special equipment and endoscope cameras created specifically for photographing journeys through the body.
