The Beginning of Everything

People have been asking themselves how everything began since time immemorial, and every culture and religion has come up with some theory about it. According to current scientific theory, the universe was born following a gigantic explosion or 'Big Bang'. Scientists first arrived at this conclusion when they noticed that all observable objects in space were moving away from us, and the further away from us they were, the faster they moved. It follows from this that, at some point in the past, everything must have formed one entity. 1965 saw the chance discovery of so-called cosmic background radiation - heat radiation, which at -270°C is just 3° above absolute zero. This is regarded as the 'residual glow' of the Big Bang. Scientists today can mathematically calculate the time of the creation of the universe to within a few fractions of a second. And yet our quest to discover the beginning of everything still brings us to the limits of our imagination.

Time travel

Travelling back in time is one of mankind's oldest and most fascinating fantasies. To kick off Expedition Cosmos, we invite you to take part in the following thought experiment: You enter a time travel capsule. While the capsule is being prepared for the launch, the doors close. The flight through space, from the earth through the solar system, past the centre of the Milky Way and to the most distant galaxies in the universe is a journey back in time.
