Water World (Wasserwelt)

Somewhat hidden behind the Stone Hill are the water ladling exhibits of Water World. How many different ways are there of physically lifting water? Once water is raised above the water level of a pool, there are numerous ways in which it can return there. The potential energy of the flowing water turns into kinetic energy, and this in turn drives forward water wheels and creates fountains in pools.

Water Screw

The principle of the water screw was formulated by the ancient Greek mathematician, Archimedes. When a water screw is turned, water is transported upwards through the spiral, and in the past such screws used to irrigate fields, often driven by the wind. How much water can you transport upwards in this case?

Ladle

An oversized spoon is dipped into the water and tipped over its axis. At the upper end, water runs out, 40 centimetres above the level of the pool. Sometimes just combining straightforward principles and increasing their dimensions massively is sufficient to achieve the desired effect. In this case we use the principles of a spoon and a seesaw to transport water.

Water Arcs

Water shoots out of the Perspex column in high arcs. What determines the shape of these arcs? To observers it soon becomes clear that it is the height of the water column above the hole that determines how the water shoots out of the side.
